C. S. Lewis’ “Four Loves” is one of the must-reads for me because it explains a lot what emotions are in the context of an interpersonal relationship. One of the loves explained in the book is that of love of friendship, i.e. love between or among friends. I was talking to a friend once about this idea and we agreed that friends who just like our posts on Facebook but who don’t even bother to give us two minutes of their time are not really true friends. Friendship is one venue to exercise our self-giving and generosity. So, we concluded that real friends are those who listen to you, who share with you their joys and sorrows while you also listen them. Real friends are those who take time and effort (and money) to visit you when you are sick or to get-together with you to go out when you’re feeling down. Sometimes, it can be a “chore” to be a friend because you’re not there only during the good times but also when you don’t feel like it. True friends are treasures indeed that we always have to be thankful for.
